Choose Your University and Program
Research Australian universities and identify programs that match your interests. The Go8 universities are the most prestigious — University of Melbourne, ANU, University of Sydney, UNSW, University of Queensland, Monash University, University of Western Australia, and University of Adelaide. Consider factors like program structure, location, internship opportunities, graduate outcomes, and scholarship availability.
Check Entry Requirements
Australian universities evaluate your Class 12 results. Most Go8 programs require 75–90% overall, with higher requirements for competitive courses like Medicine, Law, and Engineering. Some universities use an adjusted ATAR equivalent for international students. Check prerequisite subjects carefully — for example, Engineering typically requires Mathematics and Physics at Class 12 level.
Prepare Your English Proficiency Test
Most Australian universities require IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0. Go8 universities and competitive programs often require IELTS 7.0. TOEFL iBT 79–94 is also accepted. Take your test well in advance so scores are available when you apply. Some universities also accept PTE Academic scores.
Apply Directly to Universities
Submit your application through each university’s individual online portal. You will need to upload your academic transcripts, English test scores, passport copy, and any additional documents required by the program. There is no limit on how many universities you can apply to — we recommend applying to 4 to 6 universities across a range of competitiveness levels.
Write a Statement of Purpose if Required
Some Australian programs — particularly in business, law, and postgraduate-entry courses — require a statement of purpose or personal statement. This should explain your academic background, why you have chosen the program, your career goals, and why you want to study in Australia. Keep it focused, specific, and genuine.
Apply for Scholarships
Australia offers a range of scholarships for international students. The Australia Awards Scholarships are funded by the Australian Government and cover full tuition, living allowance, and travel. Most Go8 universities also offer merit-based scholarships ranging from AUD 5,000 to full tuition waivers. Apply for scholarships simultaneously with your university application — most deadlines align with early application rounds.
Receive and Accept Your Offer
Universities issue conditional or unconditional offer letters within 2 to 6 weeks of application. A conditional offer requires you to meet final grade conditions. Once you accept an offer, pay the enrollment deposit and you will receive a Confirmation of Enrollment (CoE) — a document required for your student visa application.
Obtain Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
All international students studying in Australia are required to hold Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of their studies. This must be arranged before applying for your student visa. Many universities have preferred OSHC providers and may arrange this on your behalf — check your offer letter for details.
Apply for Your Student Visa — Subclass 500
Apply for the Australian Student Visa (Subclass 500) through the ImmiAccount portal at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au. You will need your CoE, valid passport, OSHC details, proof of financial capacity, English test results, and a Genuine Student statement explaining your intention to study. Apply at least 6 to 8 weeks before your course start date. Processing typically takes 4 to 6 weeks.
Post-Study Work Visa — Subclass 485
After graduating, apply for the Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) which allows you to live and work in Australia for 2 to 4 years depending on your qualification level and where you studied. Students who studied in regional Australia receive extended visa durations. This visa is an excellent pathway to Australian permanent residency through skilled migration programs.
